Taking your labrador with you whenever you go shopping or for a weekend away is great fun. Its so easy to just jump in the car and go!
If you ever thought twice about taking your labrador now is the time to just go for it
Travelling by car is still becoming more popular and more and more people are owning them. Cars are also getting safer, not only for you, but for your pets aswell.
Firstly lets discuss what to do if you are taking your labrador on a journey in the car.
Before you get into the car take your labrador for a walk around the block so that he has a chance to ‘eliminate’. Eliminating prior to getting into the car avoids accidents. Going for the walk will most probably provide sufficient exercise for him to remain calm during the journey.
As with air travel you should not give your labrador a sedative if it is a long journey. Your lab should fall asleep naturally unless your veterinarian says otherwise.
If you have an accident it is in you and your dogs best interests that he be able to wake up. A sedative is not advisable.
During the trip you should stop for a few minutes every couple of hours or so. This will give you the chance to stretch your legs and your lab the opportunity to ‘eliminate’ if need be. This break also allows your lab to stretch his legs and perhaps have a drink and snack before the next stop.
In the car temperatures can rise and fall. You should keep control of the temperature inside the car by using both the air conditioner and the heater. In order to make Pet Travel as comfortable you should be aware of what temperature the back seats are. You wouldn’t want your lab catching a cold.
Pet Safety inside the car
Keeping your lab safe while travelling is very important. You should not have to keep diverting your attention off the road while you are travelling.
Pet safety has become more and more of a focal point in Pet Travel.
There are Car Seats available for labradors. This is great! You can purchase a car seat in a number of colours and textures. Its such a fantastic idea because of the comfort and protection it will provide your dog.
If you find that your lab wants to join you in the front seat even when you tell him not to you may want to look at doing something about it. Being distracted while driving is not a good idea, it can be very dangerous. Cars can be easily equipped with a grate that divides the front and back seats. Although it doesn’t look all that great it can reduce the chances of an accident.
