Question
Hi
I have a Lab puppy ,Kaju, 3months old. What is the ideal size/brand/type of dog crate I should buy for him?
Do the crate require to remain even after he is house broken? Since Labs grow to be large dogs very soon I do not want to spend to much money buying a dog crate almost every month.
Pls suggest what is the best practice for Labs in this regard.
thanks and best regards
Raj
Answer
I would go for a
dog crate which is for larger dogs however has a partition you can use when they are younger.
In this way you only need to buy the one dog crate. The
Midwest iCrate Double Door Folding Dog Crate (36″ L X 23″ W X 25″ H; Collapsible; Wire) is a very good buy.
If a crate is used properly it will become a kind of home for your dog and once he is older and trained you can just leave the door open so that if he feels like going in he can.

Question
I just had a question on crating your Labrador. You mentioned that you should never use the crate as a punishment or prison, but I became confused when you stated in this paragraph. Its the last sentence of the paragraph. You stated that the crate should become the place where he gets sent to if he has misbehaved. Was that a typo? Below is your paragraph about crates:
Never use the crate as a punishment tool
I cannot stress the importance of not using the crate as a ‘prison’. This can have a serious effect on your Labrador. The crate is meant to be a place where he can enjoy himself and not have to worry about anything. It should become the place where he gets sent to if he has misbehaved.
By the way, thank you for your website. I will be keeping this one as favorite to refer to.
Answer
Yes that is definitely a typo! Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention and sorry for the confusion it has caused you. The last sentence should read:
It should not become the place he gets sent to if he has misbehaved.
Once again thanks for pointing it out and thank you for your kind words about my site 🙂
