Go Flying with your Labrador and go round the world together!
Whereas in the past many labrador owners were worried about leaving their lab behind it is no longer a concern. You can bring your lab with you.
Among the hundreds of different airlines there are a few that will allow your labrador to travel aswell. If you get in touch with a few you will soon find out ‘who does and who doesn’t’.
Unfortunately for labradors they are a bit too big to stay in the cabin so they would have to remain in the hold. This is not unusual. Although some airlines are beginning to allow smaller dogs into the cabin there is still a long way to go before larger dogs like labradors are allowed.
Either way your labrador would have to remain in a dog container.
Being in the cargo bay with no one around can be highly unsettling, no doubt about it. I have seen many dogs looking very worried when going in and looking very upset and nervous when coming out.
They have very little space, no interaction and the blaring sound of the engines to enjoy. For them it doesn’t exactly make for a great journey.
If you decide to take your labrador with you on a flight you should make sure that you take him for a good walk before hand so that he can relieve himself and work off some energy. The more tired he is the better as he will hopefully sleep during the flight.
Under no circumstances (unless under veterinarian orders) give your labrador a sedative or any other medication that will put him to sleep. This is highly dangerous as high altitudes are known to have an effect on some medication.
You have to sure that all forms of identification are up to date and correct. Also, keep hold of some recent photos just in case he gets lost.
If you labrador has little, or no experience inside a container spend some time at home with him. Leave the container open with perhaps a toy or something desirable inside. Your labrador will probably go inside and get comfortable a few times. You should try this for a few days, maybe even a couple of weeks if your lab is a bit nervous about new places.
